I ditched Facebook in favor of Ello, and so should you!

ElloFacebook Vs Ello? Ello wins! Today I killed my Facebook and signed up with Ello. In case you haven’t heard, Ello is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Look, I had 5000 Facebook friends on my personal account and 4400 followers or “likes” on my artist page so this was not an easy thing for me to do. In the last few years I have been getting fed-up (like many others) with Facebook and their undermining of peoples privacy. Then they started with this ad bullshit bombarding us with ads that no one wants to see. Mark Zuckerberg no doubt made an assfull of money with his dot com. Facebook has a net worth of $190 billion. Ultimately we have all been pimped out. Facebook has no product. We are the product. You and me. We have been turned into a commodity. So since Facebook refused to cut me a check for the 7 years of content I supplied them, I decided to pull the plug. It feels great to be Facebook free for the first time in 7 years.

I still use Twitter, although I admit I’m not happy with them either (the IPO, the advertising etc). But the difference with Twitter is, with a 140 character limit its hard for people to get on your nerves. Plus they are not as aggressive with the advertising like Facebook, and they rarely censor, unlike Facebook.

Welcome to Ello! If your a creative, Ello is the perfect solution. Ello is the newest player on the social media scene. There is absolutely NO advertising. From their WTF page:

Ello doesn’t sell ads. Nor do we sell data about you to third parties.

Virtually every other social network is run by advertisers. Behind the scenes they employ armies of ad salesmen and data miners to record every move you make. Data about you is then auctioned off to advertisers and data brokers. You’re the product that’s being bought and sold.

Collecting and selling your personal data, reading your posts to your friends, and mapping your social connections for profit is both creepy and unethical. Under the guise of offering a “free” service, users pay a high price in intrusive advertising and lack of privacy.

We also think ads are tacky, that they insult our intelligence and that we’re better without them.

Unlike every other social media platform, Ello respects your privacy. They give you the option to opt out of information sharing.

When it comes to design, Ello is miles ahead of Facebook and Twitter. Ello was created by artists. It has a minimalist design that just works. It makes you want to use it.

Right now Ello is in Beta mode and membership by invitation-only. To join Ello, you need to know someone that is already on the network. I have a few invites left, if your interested in joining just send me an email at info@johnkobeck.com and put Ello Membership in the subject line. In the meantime, you can fine me at Ello!
